Bird conservation in Lesser Prespa Lake: benefiting local communities and building a climate change resilient ecosystem, LIFE Prespa Waterbirds Ch. GIANNAKOPOULOS EUROPEAN 2016 The overall project aim of the LIFE Prespa Waterbirds is to improve the conservation status of target bird species in the area by addressing the following major threats: a)Limited foraging areas for wading birds; b)Obstruction by reed-beds of the potential foraging sites and spawning of fish; and c) The potentially devastating impact of avian flu on pelican meta-populations. The project's conservation actions will also help the ecosystem adapt to climate change, while providing benefits to the local community. In addition, the project will also contribute to the implementation of EU nature and biodiversity policy and legislation (more specifically the Birds and Habitats directives and Target 1 of the EU Biodiversity Strategy), by applying Natura 2000 network site management and wetland restoration actions, as well as public awareness and training. In addition, the project will contribute to achieve "good status" of Prespa Lake under the Water Framework Directive and will contribute to the EU Climate Change Adaptation Strategy.

Evaluation of monitoring plans under the EU Emissions Trading Scheme for the period 2013 - 2020 SARAFIDIS NATIONAL 2013 The scope of the project was to examine the monitoring plans for the period 2013 - 2020 submitted by the installations included in the EU-ETS system (as foreseen by Regulation 601/2012) to the Greek competent authority, to prepare proposals for improvements/revisions in accordance with the provisions of the Regulation and to support the national competent authority in the consultations with the installations involved.
Assessment of environmental noise within the scope of Directive 2002/49/EC for the Agglomeration of Patras KOTRONAROU NATIONAL 2013 The project involves the Strategic Noise Mapping and Action Planning in accordance with the requirements of END (Environmental Noise Directive 2002/49/EC ) for the city of Patras. IERSD acts as scientific advisor in a Consortium that has been assigned this contract by the Hellenic Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate Change. Basic tasks undertaken by IERSD are: meteorology issues; support to noise and exposure assessment using noise model; and, legal - institutional issues involved in the preparation of action plans for noise protection.
Improving our understanding of wave-air-sea interaction in the marine boundary layer KALOGIROS INTERNATIONAL 2013 Study of the structure of the atmospheric boundary layer near sea surface and especially the effect of sea waves on the profile of atmospheric parameters and the exchange of kinetic energy beween sea and air using already available datasets from various measurement platforms (aircraft, ships) as well as new data which willl be collected very close to sea surface using small buoys equiped with fast sensors. The final aim of the project is more accurate parameterization of the above physical processes in atmospheric and wave forecast models.

EracoBuild: The Square Mile Retrofit Project ASSIMAKOPOULOS EUROPEAN 2013
Global mapping of aerosol properties using neural network inversions of ground and satellite based data KAZADZIS EUROPEAN 2012 AEROMAP is designed to meet the need for accurate global mapping of atmospheric aerosols. It will use the full, daily coverage of the Earth provided by the MODIS satellite in 3 wavelength bands, to extrapolate local Earth-based aerosol measurements and characterizations currently provided by the sparse AERONET stations. Extrapolation will be achieved by using artificial neural networks trained with MODIS data as input and AERONET data as output. Global aerosol maps will then be produced and validated, providing a new full-Earth coverage real-time monitor of aerosols updated daily. Cluster analysis will be performed on the global maps produced in order to help classify the worldwide distribution of aerosols and their time-dependent variation.

Low Carbon South East Europe GEORGOPOULOU EUROPEAN 2012 LOCSEE aims at building capacity for climate change mitigation in South-East Europe (SEE), and at a systematic cross-sectional approach in developing, planning and implementing low carbon policies and measures. NOA will model the potential low carbon measures in priority sectors in 5 SEE countries (Albania, Croatia, Montenegro, Serbia and FYROM), will develop and coordinate a Regional Policy Network for low carbon policies, will organize relevant workshops, will compile a manual for the development of low carbon policies, and will establish a National Working Group for low carbon policies. Other project activities comprise the compilation of a state-of-the-art analysis for the implelementation of low carbon policies and measures in SEE countries, the definition of good practices etc.

The goal is to evaluate, simulate and optimize the energy efficiency of products for buildings and facility components in variations of real life scenarios before their realization, acknowledging the stochastic life-cycle nature of material properties, weather data and occupancy profiles. The focus is on multi-model design and testing, stochastic lifecycle analysis/simulation in combination with new supporting ontology and interoperability tools and services, and respective re-engineering of existing tools, making them more intelligent and smartly interoperable. Aerosol and Cloud Influence on global surface UV irradiance retrieve from satellite sensors KAZADZIS EUROPEAN 2010 The main overall scientific goal of this project isto search for improvements in estimating surface UV from satellite measurements(AURA/OMI, EUMETSAT/O3MSAF) and thus to decrease the uncertainty related to theglobally available? surface UV data, whichis of importance and interest for a wide discipline of UV related studies.The above goal is planned to be achieved through the integration of measurements from differentsatellite sensors, which is likely the most feasible strategy for improving onthe uncertainties related to UV radiation data. In addition, to increase the UVdata end users, with emphasis on the Atmospheric chemistry research communityintroducing global products of photolysis frequencies of O?zone and NO2. UsingUV irradiance satellite/products, a modified method will be proposed for theretrieval of such parameters in a global scale. Integrated use of satellite remote sensing and hydraulic modeling for the flood risk assessment at a catchment scale in Cyprus RETALIS INTERNATIONAL 2010 The main goal of the SATFLOOD project is the digital mapping of the urban sprawl in the island of Cyprus with the application of digital image analysis techniques to high spatial resolution satellite images and radar satellite images to record in detail the past flood zones of the local drainage network. Through this multidisciplinary approach, the present and the past regime of Yialias catchment area is under assessment. The target is to develop predictive models that can be utilized by the local authorities as road maps for a future sustainable urban planning.

Climate change impacts on the touristic development of sensitive areas in the Greek territory. Case study: Messinia - Integrated Tourism Development Areas GERASOPOULOS NATIONAL 2010 This proposal aims at studying not only the phenomena which may affect tourism in the future, but also to study the interaction between different phenomena which affect each other directly or indirectly, amplifying or accelerating their evolution, in other words to study the synergy between these phenomena and their relation to climate change. The outcome of the study will be the estimation of the climate evolution in the area, with the use of climatic and other indices, and specific suggestions for smooth adaptation of the tourism sector to climate change, during the following decades.
Software development for the implementation of the national regulation on the energy performance of buildings DASCALAKI NATIONAL 2010 Development of the official national software (TEE-KENAK) for building energy audits and labeling, and the inspection of boilers & heating systems and air-conditioning installations, in accordance to the European Directive on the Energy Performance of Buildings (EPBD), N.3661/08 and the national regulation (KENAK). Maintenance of the Municipal Laboratory of Environment, Municipality of Megara (Instruments Maintenance - Software Development - Data Processing) PSILOGLOU NATIONAL 2009 Maintenance of functionality and reliability of the automated actinometric and meteorological station in the Municipality of Megara. Along with the continuous public awareness of prevailing weather conditions in the region, the aim of the project is new meteorological data to be collected for the historic area of Megara, and new climate data to be developed inorder to be compared with historical data available.
Estimation of the incoming solar radiation on horizontal and inclined planes in the area of Tripolis, for the assessment of the energy performance of a PV electric energy production plant. PSILOGLOU NATIONAL 2009 The aim of the project is to assess the energy performance of a PV electric energy production plant, which was installed in the industrial area of Tripoli (Peloponnese). For this reason, a modern fully automated actinometric and meteorological station was installed. Besides the basic meteorological parameters, the intensity levels of total and diffuse solar radiation incident on a horizontal surface are recorded, along with the direct component, and the intensity of the total solar radiation incident on an inclined surface of the same inclination and orientation that was chosen for PV panels. The direct component was recorded using an automated sun positioning system and the diffuse one using a shading sphere, according to World Meteorological Organization (WMO) recommendations.

Typology Approach for Building Stock Energy Assessment DASCALAKI EUROPEAN 2009 Creation of a harmonised structure for European building typologies, with an emphasis on residential buildings. The structure considers the different national construction types. The typology structure was filled with national data by each partner, including typical values for: thermal envelope areas, U-values and g-values, performance of supply systems, frequencies of building and system types in the national stock, energy saving measures on two levels: "typical" and "advanced". Documentation for each participating country includes an overview of the energy performance of typical buildings and the possible energy saving by refurbishment measures. Network for supporting Marine Affairs in the Mediterranean - NETMARIMED LAGOUVARDOS EUROPEAN 2008 NETMARIMED was aiming at conducting activities in support of the development of a network of institutions dedicated to Marine Affairs in the Mediterranean. The objective was to improve maritime services, while maximizing economic and social benefits, particularly in the field of marine transportation. Key activities were: evaluation of the technical feasibility and cost-benefit of a weather-routing service;a case study for Malta with test applications. Several activities were performed : (1) An analysis of some long Mediterranean East-West routes; such an analyses was useful in order to assess whether in long routes major alternatives (e.g. passing North or South of Crete while going to Cyprus) actually prove to be better in different weather conditions and, in case, which benefit they eventually induce. (2) A set of tests to assess potential of probabilistic forecasts for weather-routing. (3) An economic assessment of the above tests. (4) A test case for Malta with applications, in order to study benefits of such techniques for a specific Mediterranean country.

SEE-GRID eInfrastructure for Regional eScience, EU, INFRA-2007-1.2.2, Integrating Activities ? ICT-based e-Infrastructures KOTRONI EUROPEAN 2008 SEE-GRID intended to provide specific support actions to pave the way towards the participation of the SE European countries to the Pan-European and worldwide Grid initiatives. This was accomplished through dissemination conferences and training material including cookbooks, pilot and demonstration test-beds for hands-on experience, applications' adaptations to be able to use the Grid, operational and support centre schemes and organisation, and finally feasibility studies and roadmaps for the integration of the SEE to the European Research Area (ERA) via an extended Pan-European Grid infrastructure. SEE-GRID had the following objectives: (a) Create a human network in the area of Grids, eScience and eInfrastructures in SEE, (b) Extend support to Pan-European Grid efforts (e.g. GRIDSTART, DAMIEN, DATAGRID, EUROGRID, CROSSGRID, DATATAG, EGEE, etc) in the SEE region, (c) Co-operate with GEANT, SEEREN initiatives and exploit their infrastructures and results in the region, (d) Integrate selected Grid sites into a regional pilot testbed and demonstrate selected applications within the Pan-European Framework. (e) Promote awareness in the region regarding Grid developments. (f) Ease the digital divide and bring South-Eastern European Grid communities closer to the rest of the continent, (g) Establish a dialogue at the level of policy developments for research and education and provide inputs to the agenda of national governments and funding bodies, (h) Promote regional and international collaboration in the SEE area and with neighbouring countries. Kotroni Improvement of prediction of meteorological and climate parameters in the Eastern Mediterranean, Excellency in Greek Research Centres, Financement: Greek Secretariat for Research and Technology Purpose: The main goal of the project was the improvement of prediction capabilities of atmospheric and climatic parameters at local/regional scale in the Eastern Mediterranean. To this end, we investigated techniques and algorithms for the assimilation and integration of high resolution weather information into regional forecasting models. The existing relevant infrastructure at NOA (an X-band polarimetric Doppler radar, a European-wide network of lightning detectors, satellite receivers) have been integrated for forecasting purposes and hydrometeorological research. Moreover the effect of the expected climate change at the local/regional scale has been examined. The knowhow gained in this project improved the role of NOA in weather prediction (especially high impact weather) in Greece and in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The focus is on ozone and particulate matter (chemical and physical characterization), and their precursors. Observations, Analysis and Modeling of Lightning Activity in Thunderstorms, for use in Short Term Forecasting of Flash Floods LAGOUVARDOS EUROPEAN 2006 In the frame of FLASH project it has been proposed the use of lightning data to better nowcast (3-hour prediction) and forecast (24-48 hour prediction) the location, intensity and timing of heavy convective precipitation events. For this, it was attempted to develop rainfall-lightning relationships using lightning and precipitation data sets in the Mediterranean region, and to use lightning information in conjunction with infrared / microwave observations from geostationary / low Earth orbiting satellites to improve cloud characterization, convection detection and precipitation retrieval from space. With the help of cloud and meso- scale models numerous cases studies of past flash flood events in Europe have been simulated to better understand the connection between intense precipitation and lightning activity. The rainfall estimates for past and future floods have been used as input into hydrology models to investigate the ability to predict regions of flooding on the ground, together with the time lags between heavy rainfall and flooding. Moreover, algorithms for short-term nowcasting have been developed, to allow for the short-term flash flood warnings via the internet for the entire Mediterranean region, and perhaps later Europe. Furthermore, using assimilated lightning data in mesoscale meteorological models the possibility of improving the 24-48 hour forecasts of severe precipitation events has been investigated.
Weather Risk Reduction in the Central and Eastern Mediterranean KOTRONI EUROPEAN 2006 The main objective of the work was to build an early warning system that provides accurate and detailed weather forecasts and disseminates the corresponding warnings. In order to meet this objective, a solid partnership was anticipated, comprising scientific groups and end-users from all four EU countries participating in ARCHIMED. The scientific partners have built and demonstrated a system capable of producing detailed weather forecasts, based on observations (mainly from satellites since a major part of ARCHIMED domain is covered by the sea) as well as from high-resolution weather and wave models. In collaboration with the end-users of the project (regional authorities and civil defense agencies) the weather and wave forecasts have been tailored according to their specific needs and the final warning system has been constructed and operated, disseminating the warnings to them

Weather routing in the Mediterranean LAGOUVARDOS EUROPEAN 2005 The project was led by the Italian agency CINFAI (Consorzio Interuniversitario per la Fisica delle Atmosfere e delle Idrosfere) and brought together partners from some of the main MEDOCC countries with clear maritime interests, namely Italy, Greece and Malta. WERMED estimated risk scenarios for maritime transportation in the Mediterranean, through the compilation and use of high resolution climatologies of key meteorological and oceanographic quantities based upon historical databases developed under recent international research projects. The potential risks of Mediterranean main routes have been assessed, focusing on economical costs of running ships during different types of weather. Socioeconomical impacts of ship-routing have been analysed and a prototype system of weather-routing based on a chain of mesoscale meteorological and sea-state models has been planned.

Numerical and experimental investigation of the flow field characteristics and dispersion of pollutants in typical urban street canyons ASSIMAKOPOULOS NATIONAL 2005 Scaled two dimensional experiments for different street canyon geometrical configurations in a simulated urban environment were performed with a cross flow triple hot wire constant-temperature anemometer. The effect of heating the street canyon walls was also investigated experimentally.
