Climate change is a global issue that has implications on the regional scale, thus affecting counties and regions to various degrees and in several sectors. Future climate projections obtained from global and regional climate models are required to assess changes in mean and extreme climate events. Substantial effort is required to validate the climate models using station data or gridded observational datasets.
Climate change impacts are often expressed only in qualitative terms and do not consider adequately regional and local particularities and cross-sectoral linkages. Hence, there is a need for quantitative assessments of climate change impacts on regional/ local scale in important economic sectors, and the development of methodologies for and tools for building integrated adaptation and mitigation strategies.
Past and future Research Activities
Tools and methodologies to analyse data from meteorological stations and/or climate models using climate indicators to represent both mean, extremes and trends.
Lead or contributing authors of the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC)'s 4th and 5th Assessment Reports on Climate change impacts, adaptation and mitigation. Member of the Climate Change Impacts Study Committee formed by the Bank of Greece to study the impacts of climate change in the Greek economy and main author of the final report in June 2011.
Quantitative assessment of climate change impacts on energy demand, hydrological resources, population health, tourism, agriculture, forest fires and air pollution for the present and future periods (by 2100) based on regional climate models projections and impact models' construction.
Production of detailed climate information for several sectors (such as energy and forest fires) at regional to local scales tailored for stakeholder/policy maker needs.
